Activity 3 - I can do it !

3

Activity 2 - Measure and compare

To measure and compare volume of liquid using standard units millilitres (ml) and (l).

Materials:
1. Various everyday containers, foe example cups, glasses, jugs, spoons.
2. A 500 millilitre (ml) and litre (l) measuring cylinders (or other suitable measuring cylinder available).

Procedures.
1. Divide the class into groups of four students and have them work in their cooperative groups.
2. Appoint one student in the group to be the recorder.
3. Give each group a set of containers of different sizes.
4. Give each group a millilitre (ml) and litre (l) measuring cylinders.
5. Have the students fill each of the container.
6. Have the students estimate the capacity of each container.
7. Have the students measure the liquid in each container to check their estimate.
8. Record the measure.

Activity 1- Measure and record

Measure the volume of water in the beaker.

1. Pour the water from the beaker inti the measuring cylinder. When the water level reachec 100 ml, pupils say out the volume : 100 ml.

2. Repeat the above step until it reaches the next 100 ml mark.

3. Pupils say out the volume : 200 ml

4. Repeat the above steps until the beaker is empty.

The volume of water in the beaker is 300 ml.

Read and compare the volume millilitre and litre

Read the volume of liquid to the nearest millilitre.

The volume of liquid is
about 200 millilitre.

The voume of the liquid is
about 1 litre.

We write litre as l and millilitre as ml.

Learning Outcomes :

Volume of liquid

By the end, pupils should be able to :
1. Measure, compare and estimate volumes of liquid using standard units.
2. Know the relationship between units of volume of liquid.
3. Add, subtract, multiply and divide units of volume of liquid.
4. Use and apply knowledge of volume of liquid in everyday life.
